I was still wandering the corridors of our dorm last night, beer in hand (the kind that is made in the city just north of my German home-town and invoked so much nostalgia that I bought it even at its overpriced state), when my phone buzzed at me. This is unusual at three in the morning, but I grinned to myself- a WordPress comment! It was a notification that I’d been nominated for a ‘Liebster award’– basically a chain letter in blog form, which is a way of finding out more about each other, building connection, and making virtual friends on the WordPress platform.
Side note: I’d like to know which German came up with the name…. it basically means ‘favourite’.
I am of course delighted that one of my virtual friends enjoys my random stories so much that they want to highlight this with a bright pink award logo. (Ok, so I’m not that thrilled about the pink, but I am about the award!) The nomination also highlights a detail that I’ve struggled with since I arrived in this blogging world- most of my readers don’t know me, and that feels a bit lonely occasionally. So, as there are so many of you that are frequent readers that I don’t know personally, I’ll go ahead and answer the ten questions that have been posed to me by ‘Thistles and Whistles‘, even though I am then going to break the rules and not forward it on.
1. If you could have unlimited money for a day, how would you choose to use it?
We go right to the difficult ones, eh? Unlimited money for a day. I assume that there are several terms and conditions applied to this but my initial instinct is to find a way to horde some of it, so I have unlimited money for one day, but then lots for the rest of my days as well. Assuming that that does not work I’d book all my flights for the next year of travelling, get myself the best seats in the house to an upcoming show in the Bolshoi historic theatre, and then probably attempt to do something good for my family, like buy my sister a house or bribe an old lady to leave the care home my grandma wants to go to so that she can take her place. (Have I been living in Russia too long?) The rest of the day I would undermine capitalism by handing out free money to anyone I met in the street.
2. Your favourite animal and why?
I’m fascinated by eagles, and most birds. Mostly eagles though. We saw a few when we took a family road trip back when we still lived in the USA, and their size, grace and strength is just awesome. Add the symbolism we attach from folk tales and common culture or politics, and they are just super cool. But I also really like geckos because they are the opposite- small, overlooked, but adorable and can climb anything. I’m really jealous of their climbing. Also Hedgehogs are just bad-ass.
3. Describe in a sentence where your dream home is. For eg. A cottage in the countryside with a clump of trees and a babbling brook nearby.
Surprisingly I know all about my dream home except for WHERE it is. Its a very small house, painted yellow, with two floors (and attic space). It has four rooms- an open plan kitchen/dining room, a bathroom and two bedrooms. It also has a fireplace, a wall that is just a bookshelf, super insulation, lots of plants, a wind turbine out back to generate electricity, and a plot of land with some chickens and ducks.
Where? As much as I love being in the middle of nowhere, I don’t think that my house should be that isolated- I also really like company. So I think I’ll go for: on the outskirts of a small, fairly rural town, in which all of my friends live. (Hey, you said *dream*, right?)
4. Your dream travel destination and a few things you would you like to do there.
Oh goodness. Right now I’ll go with Mongolia- I want to wild camp, hike, kayak and climb. But once I go there this summer (YAY!), I’m sure I’ll quickly find a new destination…
5. The most inspiring movie/book you’ve watched or read and what it taught you.
George Orwell: Animal Farm: You can’t trust pigs.
(I’m sorry, I’m struggling with this one… if I was listing childhood books I’d go with ‘The Giving Tree’, which is meant to teach generosity and selflessness)
6. If you could have a couple of hours talking to your favourite celebrity/an inspiring person, who would it be and what would you ask them?
I’d like to talk to Richard Dawkins. He seems pretty awesome and relaxed, I think he is very brave, and I think talking to him would be very interesting. I was completely convinced when I watched his video reading ‘love letters’ to him. I’d ask him a lot of questions about ‘The God Delusion’, but also about what it is like to be in his position, and how he finds the energy to stay so positive when there are so many haters about.
7. One thing you love about yourself.
My insane energy when I’m happy and hyper, and want to hug the world.
8. One thing you would like to accomplish in this lifetime.
There are quite a few mountains I want to climb…and I’m still playing with hopes of doing a marathon or a triathlon at some point.
9. Things you would like to see on television instead of ___________ (insert something you don’t like on TV).
Animal and Nature Documentaries instead of soap operas.
An unforgettable moments.
Sitting half way up the cliff in the Wye Valley (UK), looking at the river, trees, birds, and other climbers.
Sleeping under the stars in my sleeping bag next to a fire with members of my university family, the mountaineering club.
Taking silly selfies when dressed all posh at a great opera in the Royal Albert Hall.
Going crazy in a club with Maddi when a song from spin class came on- and pretending to cycle through the song, rather than dance.
Running through ‘rape’ seed/cannola seed fields with Kari.
Painting the inside and outside of the refrigerator box.
Cycling through quiet streets as the birds wake up in Germany.
Standing on the Red Square with the church bells ringing and snow falling all around.
So that’s all about me. According to the T&C of this award, I now have to pass on the award and ask other bloggers questions. This is to get you looking at other blogs, to see what kind of stuff I’m reading. Interested in that? See some of my favourite blogs on the list to the right. I promise I’ll update them when I notice that people have stopped posting.
